5 Tips to Learn How to Travel Like a Sales Person

As busy as professional travel sellers are, it isn’t strictly in joking that I say “you don’t get out much, do ya?” As the summer fast approaches, now is one of the more likely times that you can get away…so when you do manage to travel to one of those destinations on your own bucket list, make it work for you!

I am living proof that you can do some “work” and still have a vacation! And although I gave up multi-tasking as my New Year’s Resolution, I’ll admit that I still do mix business with pleasure now and again. After all, in a sense, pleasure is our business, isn’t it?

So when you get away, here’s my advice for coming home with more than a tan and sore feet!

1. Think like a consumer
Wherever you are, be there! Easier said than done…I know. Don’t just let the experience happen around you – be mindful of the details and aware of the aspects of your experience that would be meaningful to your clients – both the good and the less than ideal.

2. Take notes
If you’re like me, you’ll need to write it down to remember it. Keep a journal, post it to Facebook along the way, post a blog, mark up your documents – whatever works so that you can recall the details back at home and in the office.

3. Take pictures
Welcome to 2012 – you have a camera on your phone, or your iPad, or maybe you even have an actual camera! Not only does a picture truly say 1000 words (or more), it’s a great way to capture a sensation, trigger a memory and re-inspire you once you get home.

4. Take names
Is there anyone you’ve encountered along your way that may be able to assist your clients in the future, like the concierge at the resort you loved or a guide that really made the destination resonate with you? Get their name and their contact info, along with their permission to request their services at a future date. What a great way to differentiate yourself!

5. Take Charge
If you’ve done all of the above, you’ve probably got a lot of information gathered. Here’s the greatest challenge: Keep it in some order that you can retrieve when you need it. Again, in the digital age, you have many choices, so choose one that you enjoy using to capture your wealth of experience in a form you can share with potential customers.
