March: the month of shamrock shakes and the “luck of the Irish.” The thing is, we make our own luck in business and here are 5 ways to do that.
1: Take the initiative
Be bold. Commit to following up on every lead you’ve had recently BY PHONE. If you call 10 people and only one person books, that’s one more than if you had done nothing. I know email is so much easier and time efficient; however, an old-fashioned phone call can go a long way. This is not an easy one for me, either. Once I get started, though, it isn’t as bad as I make it out to be in my mind.
2: Focus on your specialty
Take one training this month that focuses on your niche or specialty. Demonstrate that you are THE one to come to for this type of trip. The Travel Institute’s Specialist courses are a great resource for this.
Yes, you can book anything as far as marketing goes; narrow down your specialty, so there is a central focus for your audience. Remember, a message meant for everyone reaches no one.
3: Reach out to past clients
When I say reach out, I mean call them. They might be wondering if you are still in business. Leave a friendly voicemail if they don’t pick up. Let them know you’re thinking of them and hoping their family is healthy. Start with those who had to cancel due to COVID. Make the call about them; not about selling them a trip. Let them know they can reach out when they’re ready… unless they’re ready to book now.
4: Three good things
We never give ourselves enough credit for what we accomplish. Each day write down three good things you accomplished. This might seem silly, but seeing where you have succeeded will breed more actions that lead to success.

5: Accept failure as part of the process
- You reach out to past clients, and no one picks up or returns your call.
- You issue quote after quote and all you get is crickets.
This may “feel” like failure. When you think of baseball, does the batter hit a home run every time? No, striking out is part of the game. Same for sales. Striking out is part of the process. Keep calling, keep quoting because it’s only a failure if you stop.
