Romania remains one of the rare destinations in Europe and the world where visitors can explore extraordinary sites with a history spanning over a millennium. This is reflected in the inclusion of several remarkable historic sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Situated at the crossroads of the Orient and Occident, Romania boasts unique castles, fortresses, wooden and painted churches, as well as a captivating delta, each steeped in ancient legends and myths.
Below are five reasons you or your clients should visit Romania now for a true authentic experience.
1. Discover the essence of slow living
An important Romanian poet said, “Eternity was born in the countryside.” I believe that’s one of the main reasons King Charles III loves it here so much, he has a royal residence. He finds Romania timeless.
As more and more of us seek a connection look to nature, community, and a simpler way of life, Romania offers many joys on the side of slow living. Whether it’s farm-to-table food, seasonal ingredients, eco-friendly practices, the promotion of local products, or the forging of community bonds, time is spent in peace and serenity. If you take time to come to Romania, you win time.
2. Experience the wildlife wonder
Romania has lots to offer in terms of natural landscapes and wildlife wonders. It’s home to the largest virgin forests in Europe outside of Scandinavia. It’s no wonder that we also have the largest populations of bears, wolves, and lynx. Depending on the time of the year, you can also expect to spot bison, wild boar, foxes, red deer, martens, chamois, or wildcats.
If you are into lush forests, mighty peaks, and scenic roads that flow through scattered, traditional villages, visiting “one of Europe’s most unspoiled wilderness,” as CNN put it, is a must.
3. Indulge in the food
I made it a point to ask all our guests what their favorite thing about Romania was. Overwhelmingly, the answer is the food.
From hearty stews to delectable pastries, Romania is a treasure trove of culinary delights waiting to be explored. We also take pride in our artisanal food traditions, from handmade cheeses and cured meats to locally produced wines and spirits, naturally prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. What makes Romanian food so special and delicious is its simplicity.
4. Immerse yourself in the tradition that is all around you
King Charles III was impressed with the Romanian Saxon Villages, and you’ll be, too. Romania’s most famous destination, Transylvania, is home to many Saxon villages dating to the 12th century. Discover traditional houses, visit the fortified churches and, in a nutshell, explore a world of traditions.
Much like Transylvania, with its Saxon villages, Bucovina is also ripe with natural beauty and rich folklore. From folk costumes to furniture, pottery, and tapestry, it’s a place where tradition thrives.
5. Engage the people who keep traditions alive
We all know love is in the little things that you discover slowly, i.e., the qualities that are beyond what meets the eye. That’s what heritage is: collective storytelling. Much like our cuisine, our traditional crafts capture our spirit. Weaving, spinning, carving, embroidering, and pottery are still practiced in various regions of Romania.
