What inspired you to pursue a career in travel and tourism? Was there a defining moment?
I have always had the travel lust in my soul. I booked many trips on my own and for other people. I was working at a job that was no longer safe and decided that I wanted to change my path and finally obtain the job that I knew would make me happy. I prayed about it and then one day on a lark, I opened up Indeed and there was a travel agent position available with AAA. I applied and then went on about my life and then my prayers were answered, they called me for an interview. I have been living the dream for about 4 years now and am so very happy.
How has your journey evolved since graduating from The Travel Institute?
I feel more confident in my position now since I graduated. Before, I doubted myself now and then. Today, I am on a roll, bring it on, I am here to serve!
What’s your favorite part about helping others experience the world through travel?
I get so excited when I work with clients about any trip they are going to take, this also helps them get more excited. I love living through them as they prepare for the trip and during the trip. I always find time during the interview and pricing process to talk to them and to get to know them better. I want them to know I care and that I want to do the best job possible. I love to send them a thank you card and always follow up with a phone call to see how it went. I learn so much from them and this helps me on my next booking.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their travel industry journey?
First, I would tell them there is a lot of documentation to booking travel and many moving parts. Organization is the key. If you are off, your co-worker should be able to look at your files and documentation and know what is going on so they can help. Also, whoever is sitting at your desk or on the phone, give them your full attention. Be respectful of them and they will respect you.
How do you stay motivated and inspired in an industry that’s constantly changing?
I try to be a blessing to at least one person a day. I also try to do as much training as possible. You learn something new every day. I just love my job so much that it keeps me motivated.
