Tonya Adkism, CTA – Alumni Spotlight

What inspired you to pursue a career in travel and tourism? Was there a defining moment?

Back in 2010, I was traveling frequently, and friends and family would constantly ask me to help them plan and book their vacations. I realized how much I genuinely enjoyed creating memorable travel experiences for others. Seeing their excitement—and knowing I played a part in it—sparked something in me. That passion led me to learn the business side of travel, and I went on to become a certified travel agent (associate). Today, I truly love helping people explore the world, whether it’s their first trip or a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Travel opens doors, creates lasting memories, and I’m grateful to help make those journeys possible.

What’s your favorite part about helping others experience the world through travel?

The favorite part is seeing the look in their eyes—the pure joy of experiencing something new for the first time. Whether it’s discovering a new culture, tasting new food, or stepping into a place they’ve only dreamed about, that moment of excitement and wonder is priceless. Knowing I helped create that experience is incredibly rewarding.

What skills from The Travel Institute have made the biggest impact in your career?

The specialized programs offered through the Travel Institute have had the biggest impact on my career. The education, along with the continued resources available to both new and seasoned travel agents, has kept me knowledgeable, confident, and competitive in the industry. The specialty programs are especially valuable because they provide in-depth destination knowledge, even for places I haven’t personally visited yet. This has enabled me to confidently sell and design experiences for my clients while ensuring they receive well-informed, high-quality travel planning.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their travel industry journey?

Travel as much and as far as you can. The experience you gain firsthand is invaluable to your growth as a travel agent. Soak up every bit of knowledge and exposure available to you—attend trade shows, participate in FAM trips, and truly experience destinations whenever possible. The more you see and learn, the more confidently and authentically you can sell those destinations to your clients.

If you could only pack 3 items for a trip around the world, what would they be?

My camera to capture the memories, a comfortable outfit for long travel days, and an open mind—because some of the best experiences come from embracing the unexpected wherever the journey takes me.

What’s one place on your travel bucket list that you haven’t crossed off yet?

Fiji
