Exceptional client engagement is the foundation of every successful travel business, and it doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through consistent, thoughtful communication that keeps you visible, relevant, and trusted by your clients.
That’s why intentional marketing is a key focus in the Certified Travel Associate (CTA) program’s Marketing module, where we discuss the importance of strategic planning rather than simply posting on social media whenever it comes to mind. Creating a clear plan helps strengthen your credibility, deepen client relationships, and ultimately lead to more bookings.
One of our professional educators and experts, Shannon Kittner, CEO and Founder of The Wander Network, is also sharing practical insights to help you take a more purposeful approach to your social media presence. She’ll also present her strategies for creating engaging video content in her webinar, Structuring a Travel Marketing Video, scheduled fortomorrow at 1:00 pm (ET).
Here is what Shannon has to say:
One of the most common questions I hear from travel advisors is: “What should I actually be posting on social media?” Many advisors start by posting randomly: sharing a supplier promotion one day, a destination photo the next, and then disappearing for weeks. But successful social media marketing doesn’t happen by accident. It happens with structure and intention.
When travel advisors organize their content the right way, social media becomes one of the most powerful tools for building credibility, trust, and bookings.
Let’s break down how to structure it.
Stop Posting Only Promotions
One of the biggest mistakes advisors make is using social media as a digital flyer board. Posting only deals or promotions may seem logical, but it rarely builds trust with potential clients. While those posts certainly have their place, a stronger connection happens when your content also gives people a reason to stay engaged even before they are ready to book. Often, travelers are watching long before they ever reach out, which is why consistent value matters.
A helpful way to do this is by creating a few core content pillars that guide what you post.
Pillar 1 Education
Travel advisors are experts, and social media is your opportunity to show it. Educational posts help position you as a trusted resource, not just someone selling travel. Examples might include:
- Tips for choosing the right cruise line
- What travelers should know before visiting a destination
- Airport or passport tips
- Travel insurance insights
When you educate your audience, you build confidence, and a confident clients book.
Pillar 2: Credibility
Another important type of content is showcasing your experience. Clients want to know that their advisor has real knowledge of the travel industry. Great credibility posts include:
- Room or suite tours
- Cruise ship cabin walkthroughs
- Hotel site inspections
- Destination experiences
- New certifications or training
These posts demonstrate that you are actively learning, traveling, and building relationships within the industry.
Pillar 3: Inspiration
Travel is emotional. People scroll social media to dream about where they could go next. This is where you can share:
- Beautiful destinations
- Personal travel moments
- Unique experiences clients might not know about
- Cultural highlights or hidden gems
Inspiration sparks curiosity, and curiosity leads to conversations.
Always Include a Call-to-Action
No matter what type of content you post, always guide your audience toward the next step. Your call-to-action might be:
- “Send me a message to start planning.”
- “Comment below if you want more details.”
- “Let’s talk about your next trip.”
Social media should create conversation, not just content.
The Good News: This Works Across Every Platform
Whether you’re posting on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, the structure remains the same. The style of content may change depending on the platform, but the goal stays consistent:
- Provide value
- Demonstrate expertise
- Inspire travel
- Guide clients toward working with you
Final Thought
Social media should never feel like a guessing game. When travel advisors move away from posting randomly and start marketing intentionally, social media becomes far more than a place to share photos. It becomes one of the most powerful tools for building authority, trust, and a sustainable travel business.
