Michelle Swisher, CTA – Alumni Spotlight

What inspired you to pursue a career in travel and tourism? Was there a defining moment?

I had always booked trips for my family & friends, loved researching trips and the joy of travel. Once we became empty nesters I decided to look into what education and options were available for becoming a Travel Agent. Once I found Bonnie & Walt Lee and their Host company Travel Quest, I knew they were the people to help me create a Travel Agency and get my education to become a travel specialist.

Can you share a moment in your career when you realized, “This is exactly what I’m meant to do”?

I experience it over and over. Everytime I see a client light up with the excitement of the upcoming trip we have planned or when they share with me the wonderful experiences they had on their trip I planned, it fills my spirit with overwhelming joy and I know this is what I am supposed to be doing.

How has your journey evolved since graduating from The Travel Institute?

I’m hosting more of my Travel with Me tours and I believe having the CTA behind my name gives me a lot more credibility when people are finding me. In a time when “anyone” can say they are a Travel Agent, I like to have the CTA to back up my claim.

What’s your favorite part about helping others experience the world through travel?

Seeing them be excited for the trips and hearing about the wonderful experiences they had. Having them tell me they are relaxed and confident about the trip because I have explained everything in detail and we have made provisions to ensure their safety and make the travel easy. My goal is always to have my clients safe and enjoying their trip to the fullest and not stressing about anything.

What’s one cultural experience that left a lasting impression on you?

This happens everywhere we go, I see how we are all the same in this world. We all have similar hopes and dreams. We all want the best for our families and children. What impresses me the most, are the countries where everyone speaks multiple languages. The USA could take a lesson from these countries.

What skills from The Travel Institute have made the biggest impact in your career?

Confidence, knowing I have trained through Travel Institute, Travel Leaders etc etc. I feel confident that I have the resources and knowledge to help my clients to the fullest.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their travel industry journey?

Before you book anything, take a deep dive into education. Things are in a constant state of change in the travel industry. Get a good foundation of education before you start sending people around the world. During Covid, I trained and trained and trained. Taking advantage of the slow travel time and building the foundation for my current very successful Agency.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in an industry that’s constantly changing?

Traveling to new locations and experiencing different suppliers. Having experience the product truly does make all the difference.

Are there any mentors or peers in the industry who’ve deeply influenced your path?

Bonnie & Walt Lee and Velma Tollison

If you could only pack 3 items for a trip around the world, what would they be?

My IPhone, backup battery and comfortable shoes! I can do about anything with an IPhone with a charge!

What’s one place on your travel bucket list that you haven’t crossed off yet?

Tahiti and Fiji
