5 Tips to Help Sell Jamaica

Jamaica is a Commonwealth with the British monarch as its head of state. It is a big island with hundreds of miles of coastline with mountains in its middle, a country infused with pride in its history, stunning landscape, and influential culture.

Jamaica is the third largest island of the Greater Antilles. It is about 148 miles long and 52 miles wide. Its landscape includes beaches, waterfalls, rivers, and lush tropical foliage. Mountains dominate the island. A narrow coastal plain surrounds them. When the Spanish arrived, the country was deeply forested. Settlers cut down the trees and cleared the land for sugarcane cultivation.

Here are 5 things you should know if you want to sell Jamaica:

1. Jamaica’s climate is tropical with hot and humid weather, although higher inland regions are more temperate. The island is in the hurricane belt and sometimes suffers significant damage.

2. Jamaica’s major airports are Norman Manley International (KIN) in Kingston, Ian Fleming International (OCJ) in Boscobel, and the island’s biggest and busiest, Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay. Negril (NEG) and Port Antonio (POT) have smaller facilities, and the island has military airports and private fields.

Charters provide service to the vacation destinations. Kingston travelers are generally business people or those connecting to flights to other Caribbean islands. Many visitors arrive by cruise ship.

3. Jamaica is known for its all-inclusives—resorts in which room, meals, certain beverages, sports, nightly entertainment, taxes, tips, and airport transfers are included. There are all-inclusives for every stage of life: resorts where one can meet or marry a spouse, honeymoon, return as a couple, or vacation with the family. Some resorts have nanny services, enhancing the island’s appeal as a family destination.

4. Tourism has made Montego bay the country’s second-largest city. It is alive with restaurants, nightlife, shops, beaches, and sports facilities. For travelers who want to be where the action is, this is the choice. Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is just two miles from town. Vacationers can be at their hotels or on the beach within minutes of arrival.

5. Ocho Rios is about a two-hour drive from the Mo’ Bay airport along the north coast highway. It was one of the first towns in Jamaica to be developed as a resort. In Ocho Rios, vacationers can climb a waterfall, soar through a rainforest on a zip line, bobsled down a mountain, or swim with dolphins.

BONUS:

Negril is a widely spread beach town. The name is a shortened version of negrillo, Spanish for Little Black Ones. Some think the name refers to the black hills south of the village or to a population of black eels found along the coast. American hippies started visiting Negril in the 1970’s setting the tone for today’s free-spirited attitude.
