For a sneak peek of this course, here are our tips on undertaking and completing a successful SWOT analysis:

A SWOT analysis aims to help you improve your operations and identify factors—inside and outside your organization—that affect performance and success. So, get out your pencil and a clean sheet of paper and start SWOTing.

  • Strengths: What makes my agency unique? Why do customers choose me over others?
Example: Do you offer personalized travel planning or specialize in niche markets like eco-tours?
  • Weaknesses: What puts my agency at a disadvantage? What resources do I need to improve?
Example: Maybe your website needs an upgrade, or you lack expertise in a popular destination.
  • Opportunities: What trends or new travel options haven’t I explored yet? How can I use these to grow my business?
Example: Could you tap into rising demand for sustainable travel or solo female travel tours?
  • Threats: What challenges could hurt my business? Who are my strongest competitors?
Example: Think about economic downturns, travel restrictions, or a new competitor in your niche.

A SWOT analysis helps you understand your strengths and weaknesses so you can build on what you do well and tackle your challenges. It also can help you in your professional development. Evaluate your skills and experience. What certifications or knowledge—like a familiarization trip (FAM) on a river cruise—could boost your expertise? Certifications from The Travel Institute or partnerships with preferred suppliers can set you apart.

Do a SWOT analysis every year to keep your business plan current and adjust your goals based on what you learn. Setting goals is important, but you also need to act on them and adapt based on your SWOT results.

This process helps you stay on track, identify what success looks like and plan how to achieve it!
