Gary Pollard, CTC – Alumni Spotlight

What inspired you to pursue a career in travel and tourism? Was there a defining moment?

I actually grew up in the travel business — our company has always been family-owned — so travel has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. From a young age, I was fascinated by the idea of seeing the world, not just through my own experiences, but through the eyes of our clients.

The defining moment for me came when I realized that what I love most is helping people. Travel gives me the chance to do that in a really special way — by helping others create experiences and memories that last a lifetime. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that something I helped plan can become one of the most meaningful moments in someone’s life

Can you share a moment in your career when you realized, “This is exactly what I’m meant to do”?

Absolutely. There was one moment that really stood out early in my career. A client returned from a trip and took the time to send me a handwritten letter describing their entire experience — from our very first phone call to the moment they arrived back home.

Reading that letter stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t just about the destinations or the logistics — it was about how cared for they felt throughout the entire process. That’s when it really hit me: personalization and relationships are the foundation of a successful career in travel.

In that moment, I knew this is exactly what I’m meant to do — to help people experience the world while feeling truly seen, understood, and valued.”

How has your journey evolved since graduating from The Travel Institute?

When I decided to pursue my CTC back in 1987, I did so to follow in my father’s footsteps, as he was also a CTC. At the time, I believed that earning that designation represented true professionalism in the travel industry — and I still believe that today.

What’s your favorite part about helping others experience the world through travel?

When they say, “Thank you”!!

What skills from The Travel Institute have made the biggest impact in your career?

The Travel Institute taught me how to run a business — not just sell travel. It gave me the tools to understand the full picture: building relationships, managing operations, and creating meaningful client experiences. Those lessons shaped how I approach every part of my work and have had a lasting impact on my success.”

What advice would you give to someone just starting their travel industry journey?

The true answer might surprise you. If your goal is to build a real career in travel, then commit to learning everything you can — not just about the products you sell, but about the business itself.

Understanding how the industry works, how to build relationships, and how to serve clients with integrity will set you apart and set the foundation for long-term success.”

How do you stay motivated and inspired in an industry that’s constantly changing?

“My motivation comes from my true love of travel and people. The industry is always evolving, and that’s part of what keeps it exciting. Every day brings new destinations, new technologies, and new ways to create meaningful experiences for clients.

What never changes is the joy of helping someone see the world — often for the first time — and knowing I played a part in making that experience special. That connection with people and the shared passion for discovery is what continues to inspire me year after year.”

Are there any mentors or peers in the industry who’ve deeply influenced your path?

My father, Stan Pollard, CTC. And others who have obtained their certification!

If you could only pack 3 items for a trip around the world, what would they be?

“My phone, my passport, and a notebook. The phone keeps me connected, the passport opens the world, and the notebook lets me capture the moments and memories along the way.”

What’s one place on your travel bucket list that you haven’t crossed off yet?

I would love to visit Antartica!
