What inspired you to pursue a career in travel and tourism? Was there a defining moment?
Ever since I can remember I wanted to be in the travel business. Initially I wanted to be a pilot, but that soon changed after I took my first cruise. I fell in love with cruising and 40+ years later, I am still in love with this industry.
Can you share a moment in your career when you realized, “This is exactly what I’m meant to do”?
There are so many to list. I would have to say was when I was promoted to VP of Sales and was asked to move to Los Angeles from Miami. I never dreamed that I would leave the east coast and move out west, and I have never looked back.
How has your journey evolved since graduating from The Travel Institute?
Since graduating from the Travel Institute my career has really taken off with leadership roles at both Norwegian Cruise Line, and with my current employer, AmaWaterways.
What’s your favorite part about helping others experience the world through travel?
My favorite part of helping others experience the world through travel is the experiences we help create that foster connections, understanding and joy, and a mutual bond or friendship that will last a lifetime. At AmaWaterways we say we want to show you the world one river at a time, and that is exactly what we try to accomplish each and every day.
What’s one cultural experience that left a lasting impression on you?
On our Africa Safaris and Wildlife cruise we visited a local African village on the Chobe River. It really left such a lasting impression on me. It showed me just how happy one can be, even if they have very little material things in their lives. Interacting with the villagers, albeit for a very short time, really allowed for meaningful human connections, fostering empathy and understanding. It just makes you realize how lucky and blessed we are, and helps you understand the true meaning of happiness.
What skills from The Travel Institute have made the biggest impact in your career?
Understanding the importance of knowledge and the difference education makes in your career. My advanced certifications have boosted my credibility and career growth.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their travel industry journey?
I would tell them to follow their heart and the wallet will follow. Also become accredited and certified and use this to your advantage over those who are not.
How do you stay motivated and inspired in an industry that’s constantly changing?
I continually strive to learn new things, set SMART Goals, and collaborate with my team. I have eliminated the word I from my vocabulary.
Are there any mentors or peers in the industry who’ve deeply influenced your path?
It would have to be Kristin Karst, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Amabassador at AmaWaterways. She believed in me and has given me a wonderful career in a company that has welcomed me like part of a family, since day 1, 8 years ago.
If you could only pack 3 items for a trip around the world, what would they be?
