What inspired you to pursue a career in travel and tourism? Was there a defining moment?
Growing up, I was captivated by shows like “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island,” which sparked my early interest in a travel career. The appeal of beautiful destinations always fascinated me. My first travel industry job was with a major airline at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. During lunch, I loved observing the travelers: busy professionals hustling to catch their flights, happy families heading on vacation, and those traveling for urgent family matters. I was often approached by travelers needing help, and I genuinely enjoyed assisting them however possible. I knew then that my journey in the travel industry had begun.
Can you share a moment in your career when you realized, “This is exactly what I’m meant to do”?
Honestly, there was a point in my travel career when I was ready to leave. I am confident I was not alone. September 11th, 2001, disrupted the travel industry like no one could have predicted. I brushed aside all emotions and worked tirelessly day and night for several weeks to guarantee that all my business travelers would arrive home. During those tense weeks, I received phone calls and emails from travelers that moved me to tears. They complimented me for keeping calm, remaining patient with them and devising alternate methods to get them home quickly and safely. They reminded me how good I am at what I do and what I am meant to do. After 24 years, my enthusiasm for travel remains as strong as ever.
